Awards & Distinctions

Being surrounded by other bright, engaged and interesting students inspires everyone to reach for their best.  HGM students pursue their passions with great commitment and the support of our school. That's why our small community of about 300 students has exceptionally high achievements in many different areas.

2018-9 So far…

  • NHHS Marching Band & Drill Team win City Championship!

2017-8

  • HGM has 7 out of 8 National Merit Scholarship winners in LAUSD. 27% of our seniors were Finalists = highest % in California, possibly the US.

  • Student was Captain of the USA Debate Team that won 5th place at World Schools Debate Championship; ranked 12th debater internationally; won EurOpen tournament.

  • Cyber Patriots National Championship- 1st, 2nd & 9th place teams. American Computer Science League National Champs.

  • Science Bowl National 2nd place

  • Student selected for LA Philharmonic Composer Fellowship

  • Band & Dance Team wins 1st place at Baldwin Park Field Tournament + Sweepstakes in percussion

  • Duke University Moot Court - 1st, 2nd & 3rd place Speakers

  • Student went to US National Chemistry Olympiad (top 20 in the nation)

  • California Science Fair: 1st place in Environmental Science

  • LA County Science Fair: Sweepstakes finalist; NASA Earth Systems Award; Earthwatch Bing Fellowship; Paleontology Society Award; 1st place in Ecology; 2nd in Physics, 2nd Place & Honorable Mention in Environmental Management.

  • Indoor Drumline wins 1st place at State DAC Championships

  • Academic Decathlon state finalists

  • Quiz Bowl team went to Nationals

  • Botball robotics wins 2nd place in LA

  • Science Olympiad 1st place at Regionals, 5th at State

  • Top essays & scholarships from Beverly Hills Literary Society

  • Congressional Debate - 2nd place at Tournament of Champions and at NSDA National Championship

  • HGM student elected Student Body President

  • HGM students elected Homecoming Queen and Prince

  • Physics Olympiad - 2 national silver medalists, 6 semifinalists

  • Biology Olympiad - 6+ national semifinalists

  • Student activists successfully organized and built alliances to defend our school from charter co-location

  • Student gets full-ride merit scholarship to Duke University

  • Student gets $10,000 scholarship from Taco Bell and a separate award to name a menu item

2016-7

  • Cyber Patriots National Champs (3 out of 12 teams in finals are from NoHo, out of 4400 teams)

  • Student helps USA win 3rd Place at World Schools Debate Championship; ranked 14th debater internationally.

  • DECA Business Club wins or places in almost every category entered in Socal

  • Science Fairs: California - 2nd in Zoology, 5th in Microbiology. LA County - Sweepstakes Finalist, 1st Place in Pharmacology, 1st Place in Animal Physiology; Honorable Mention in Microbiology

  • Senior wins Stokes Scholarship and employment with the NSA

  • Junior selected for USA Debate Team - 2nd place at WHO in Croatia, 5th at EurOpen in Germany, 2nd at Harvard.

  • Science Bowl Team Regional Champs (for 18th year), 9th place at National

  • Girls' Tennis Team wins All-City Championship (70% of team is HGM)

  • Science Olympiad Team 3rd at State; Regional Champs - win/place in all 23 events

  • Top essay & scholarship from the Beverly Hills Literary Society

  • Marching Band 1st place at SCSBOA tournaments in Baldwin Park & Simi Valley

  • Orchestra rated Unanimous Superior (highest) at SCSBOA & Van Nuys Music Festivals

  • Indoor Drumline 1st place at DAC State Championship

  • Student selected for LA Mayor's Youth Council

  • Student selected for LAUSD Superintendent's Student Advisory Council

  • Student selected as Conductor Intern and Principal Trombonist with LA Youth Orchestra

  • Model United Nations (new team!) - Best Delegate awards at UCLA and USC

  • Speech & Debate team won over 150 awards, state champion in Congressional Debate, 5 competed at Nationals

  • Botball Team wins 1st in Seeding and Double Elimination competitions, 2nd overall at regional

  • NoHo RoBo quarterfinals at First Robotics

  • Duke Moot Court - 2nd & 9th Place Teams, 10th Place Individual

  • Academic Decathlon state finalists

  • American Math Competition (AMC) - 13 students qualified for the AIME, 1 qualified for the USA Math Olympiad

  • Physics Olympiad - 5 national semifinalists

  • Biology Olympiad - 5 national semifinalists

  • Chemistry Olympiad - 2 national semifinalists

  • Computational Linguistics Olympiad - 2 national semifinalists

  • For the first time ever... 1 student reached semifinals or beyond in 4 national Olympiads - Physics, Chem, Bio and Math (yet is only a sophomore)

  • HGM student was voted Prom Queen
