Our first Friends of the HGM Meeting is on Thursday, August 28th following a general Magnet Parent Meeting.
This meeting will be run by Mr. Bradbury, and will also include elections to the Friends of HGM board.
The general meeting begins at 6:00 in the auditorium. The board meeting will follow at 7:00 in K109.
This meeting is very important. Participate and make your child's experience at the HGM the best that it can be. We welcome your involvement!

As we come to the end of the semester and the calendar year, we want to thank all of your for your continued support.
FHGM Fall Fundraising Events
During the Fall semester, the Annual Picnic and the Annual Holiday Potluck were greatly successful, and underscored the energy, unity and strength of our community.
Together, we raised more money than in previous years!
A very special thank you to our Potluck and Picnic Coordinators : Ruth Otarola-Linan, Liliana Jackson, Yazmin Peebles, Laura Frazin-Steele and Ana Mueller.
We would also like to thank all the raffle and auction donors, parent volunteers, student volunteers, teachers, and staff who made these events possible. It takes a small army of angels to make these events happen, which not only help us strengthen our community, but also raise funds to improve the HGM program at North Hollywood High School.
FHGM Contributions to the HGM
During the Fall semester, Friends of HGM funded the following projects with monies raised from and by HGM families:
- Two computer carts equipped with 21 laptops to be used in the Upper Kennedy classrooms.
- Chemistry lab tables and chairs for Ms. Richardson's classes
- Two Smart Boards
- Walkie talkies to assist administration in managing the campus
- One computer for Ms Kivork
- Software for several computers
- Funding necessary to rent a safe and quiet AP testing room
- Hosting and maintenance costs for the HGM web site
- Matching funds for the school's sports programs fundraiser
- Books and other materials
As you can see, the money our HGM families have helped raise is being put to work in ways that directly improve the education and programs that benefit our children.
On-Going Fundraising Campaign
We would like to continue supporting our fantastic program, our kids, and our excellent faculty and administration. We ask that you help us in our efforts to the extent you can. Any amount, small or large, helps. We would like to achieve 100% participation from our community.

Dear HGM Families,
The flyer for the 2013 Annual Holiday Potluck went home. Below is a link to a copy of the flyer in addition to copies of the flyers with details about the Talent Show Auditions and the Silent Auction Donations.
To make this event a success, we need HGM students to come forward to show-off their talents and HGM families (or friends of families) to donate items for the silent auction (i.e. items you've always wanted to re-gift, gift cards you have not had the chance to use, services to promote your business, something you have made, etc.).
The RSVP deadline and donations are due at the HGM office by December 2, 2013.

Friends of HGM Picnic Committee
Last night, in the context of the first HGM Parent Meeting, the new Friends of the HGM Board was elected.

Dear HGM Parents:
The first HGM Parent Meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday, September 10th, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm in the NHHS Auditorium. We urge all of you to attend this meeting. It will be your opportunity to meet the HGM's magnet coordinator, Ethan Bradbury, and its guidance counselor, Jo Rademaker -- as well as your chance to participate in a Q & A session about our program. There will be a Korean translator at this event.
At the Parent Meeting, we will also be holding elections for the board members for the Friends of the HGM (our program's booster group) for the 2013-14 school year. We have a handful of previous board members who are interested in returning, but this is an open election. We need nine members for the Board, and the participation of new parents is crucial to maintaining an active and robust support organization for our students, teachers, and staff. The purpose of the Board is to help maintain the quality of the HGM program. We work closely with the teachers and school administration, and engage in local political advocacy, in order to ensure that the HGM remains the jewel in LAUSD's crown and one of the top public school programs in the country.
Because execution is everything, each of the Board members is expected to take on one or more specific areas of responsibility (e.g., fundraising, volunteer coordination, alumni relations, website maintenance, and advocacy). In addition to filling Board positions, we are also looking for people to spearhead some of this year’s big events, including our annual Winter Potluck, which will be held on a Friday night TBD in late November/early December.
Following the Parents Meeting and the election, there will be an FHGM Board meeting. At the first Board meeting, a president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary will be elected. We will also begin planning for upcoming events. Other business may be conducted, depending on time and need. All parents are invited to attend each Board meeting, the only limitation being that no one other than Board members can vote on motions for formal actions, such as the approval an annual operating budget and specific expenditures over the course of the school year. Regardless of whether you are on the Board for this year, we urge you to take part.
After the first meeting, the Board of the FHGM continues to meet once a month in the evenings. The exact day of the week will be selected by the new Board, but this past year it was the second or third Monday of each month, depending on holidays and schedules. If you are interested in being on the Board, please let me know by Sunday, September 8th, so that I can include your name on the ballot. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
